Ballet Class

Syreeta Hector is a dance artist and educator from Toronto, Ontario. As a highly accomplished performer, Syreeta has worked for internationally recognized companies like Adelheid Dance Projects, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, Political Movement, and Toronto Dance Theatre. She is a proud graduate of The National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and has achieved her Master of Arts in Dance Studies from York University.
Her work called “Black Ballerina” focuses on the dualities within ones identity, along with Syreeta’s blackness and indigeneity in relationship to classical ballet. This short work in progress solo gained recognition at the SummerWorks Festival in 2019 and won the Stratford Festival Lab Award for Research and Creation. In 2019, “Black Ballerina” was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award and is currently being performed internationally.
Currently, Syreeta is touring "Black Ballerina" and creating one commissioned ensemble creations. Syreeta gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for supporting the new work, “Not Another Naked White Person” which will act as the second chapter in her “Black Ballerina” series.
These experiences have deepened her creative, performance, and educational practices, and have fuelled her teaching methodologies. She is an Assistant Professor in the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Department at York University.

Syreeta Hector is a dance artist in Toronto, Ontario. Her solo work called “Black Ballerina” focuses on the dualities within one’s identity, along with Syreeta’s blackness and indigeneity in relationship to classical ballet. This solo gained recognition at the SummerWorks Festival, won the Stratford Festival Lab Award for Research and Creation, and was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore award in Outstanding Performance by an Individual. While she continues to tour “Black Ballerina,” Syreeta is developing a new dance theatre work which will be the second chapter in the “Black Ballerina” series.
Syreeta has been commissioned to make ensemble works for Mocean Dance (Nova Scotia), ProArteDanza (Ontario), and most recently will create a new work for Kittiwake Dance Theatre (Newfoundland). Although performance and creation endeavours remain a priority for Syreeta, she derives an equal measure of inspiration by teaching movement and choreography. She is honoured to be a part of the Department of Dance as an Assistant Professor at York University.
